A sunny day in 1997 shattered the lives of countless Nigerians. The Warri crisis, fueled by ethnic tensions and the struggle for control over oil, erupted in Delta State, displacing hundreds of thousands. This historical backdrop forms the canvas for Ms Tobuyei’s poignant tale. Three friends, classmates with seemingly ordinary lives, find their world upended in a single school day. Decades later, a chance encounter reunites them, forever altering their paths in ways both awkward and profound.
“GASP” transcends the boundaries of a simple narrative. Inspired by Ms. Tobuyei’s personal experiences and societal observations, the novel delves into the multifaceted nature and consequences of violence. It serves as a powerful call for social justice, raising awareness, fostering empathy, and stimulating constructive dialogue about the lasting impact of conflict on individuals and communities.
Ms Tobuyei wears many hats. By day, she serves as a Senior Judicial Research Officer for the Bayelsa State Judiciary, leveraging her expertise as a lawyer with a Master’s degree in International Monetary Law. But her passion extends beyond legal frameworks. Theresa is also the Editor-in-Chief of St. Theresa Magazine, using her platform to champion humanitarian causes.
Currently pursuing a PhD in Law, Theresa’s thirst for knowledge is insatiable. Based in Yenagoa, Nigeria, she finds inspiration in the salty breeze and a keen observation of human nature. Theresa’s life exemplifies the power of combining various talents and a deep commitment to making a positive impact on society.
