Plateau Launches World Bank-Backed Campaign to Protect Newly Planted Trees from Vandalism

A campaign to prevent vandalism and protect newly planted trees has been launched in Plateau State, Nigeria, as part of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project.

The initiative, supported by the World Bank and the Plateau State Government, aims to address land degradation and combat climate change across Northern Nigeria. Thousands of trees and shrubs have been planted along road medians in Jos, the state capital, as part of the project’s efforts to promote landscape restoration and sustainable agricultural practices.

However, the project’s implementing partners have expressed concern over the threat of vandalism to the newly planted greenery. To address this, ACReSAL Plateau State and De-Eden Royal Construction International Ltd have launched a campaign titled “Protect Our Green Guardians: Stop Vandalism of Roadside Trees and Shrubs.”

The campaign highlights the critical role of trees and shrubs in preventing soil erosion, providing shade, and maintaining environmental health. The Plateau State Government has emphasized the importance of community involvement in safeguarding these ecological assets.

Citizens are urged to adopt a “Keep It Green” mentality, respecting and caring for the roadside trees and shrubs. They are also encouraged to report any acts of vandalism to the authorities and participate in preserving the state’s natural resources.

The success of the ACReSAL project relies on collective efforts to protect the environment for future generations.
