Joey Shekwonuzhibo The Issue: Waste management is a significant issue when it comes to preserving the environment, and a poses a problem to several countries including Nigeria.
Factors such as:
- Rapid urbanization,
- Inadequate infrastructure (also arising from poor town planning),
- Poor waste collection systems, and
- Lack of public awareness about proper waste disposal all contribute to poor waste management.
As a result, many Nigerian cities and communities often feature overflowing dumpsites, polluted water bodies, and contaminated air.
The Numbers: According to the World Bank, Nigeria currently generates at least 32 million tonnes of solid waste each year, and this number is projected to rise to 107 million tonnes by 2050.
Illegal dumping and burning of solid waste create the environment for health hazards and air pollution. Efforts have been made to improve waste management infrastructure and promote recycling and sustainable practices -some of them ongoing- but implementation and funding remain a challenge.
