The news: The University of Jos (UNIJOS) refuted online rumours claiming a student’s recent death resulted from negligence at the university clinic.
In a statement, UNIJOS spokesperson Abdullahi Abdullahi clarified that no student or staff member passed away at the clinic within the past year. They acknowledged a female student, Miss Nankling Samuel, was admitted with a sickle cell anaemia crisis. Despite the clinic’s medical team’s efforts, her condition worsened, necessitating a referral to Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) where she sadly passed away.
UNIJOS expressed deep condolences to Miss Samuel’s family, a 300-level Political Science student, calling her loss a profound tragedy. The university is reaching out to the family to offer support during this difficult time, including a planned formal condolence visit from management members.
Going forward: The statement addressed recent student protests that led to campus closure. UNIJOS administration met with student representatives to hear their concerns and grievances, emphasizing their belief in resolving issues through open dialogue. Discussions resulted in agreements for the university to address pressing concerns like water provision and essential utility renovations. Matters requiring longer solutions will follow established procedures, reflecting the university’s commitment to student and staff well-being.
UNIJOS reassured the public that the university remains fully operational for academic and administrative activities. They urged students to be cautious of misinformation and to rely on official university communication channels or designated representatives for accurate information.
