The International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) has selected Philemon Obeze, an Associate Reporter at JoeyOffAir, for its Countering AI-Enhanced Malign Influence in Nigeria project. JoeyOffAir is a community journalism platform dedicated to covering North-Central Nigeria.
Obeze is among 120 journalists, influencers, and civic actors chosen from across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones to participate in the initiative.
“The project includes a two-day AI literacy workshop in Abuja, Lagos, Enugu, and Kano, equipping participants with the skills to detect and combat AI-driven disinformation and malign influences in Nigeria, ultimately fostering responsible and accurate information sharing,” said Chukwudi Iwuoha, ICIR’s Programme Officer.
Supported by the US Embassy, the one-year initiative seeks to curb the spread and impact of AI-enhanced disinformation in Nigeria by promoting media literacy and responsible journalism.
“The media landscape is evolving rapidly, and with AI-generated disinformation on the rise, journalists must stay ahead,” Obeze said. “This programme is a crucial step in ensuring that we, as reporters, can uphold truth and accountability in an era of digital manipulation.”
ICIR, an independent, non-profit media organisation, is committed to strengthening investigative journalism in Nigeria. “Our goal is to cultivate a culture of investigative, data-driven reporting that enhances accountability and improves service delivery for citizens,” Iwuoha added.
Joey Shekwonuzhibo, the Publisher of JoeyOffAir and a journalist at TheICIR, was also selected for the project.
